IN PHOTOS: Aonishiki soars to ozeki

Ukrainian sumo sensation Aonishiki won promotion to the sport's second-highest rank of ozeki at a record pace after only 14 professional tournaments, having begun his journey at the bottom of the six-tier plus pyramid in September 2023.

The 21-year-old, whose real name is Danylo Yavhusishyn, brought Ukraine its first Emperor's Cup in November 2025 at a record-tying pace of five tournaments since his debut at the top-tier makuuchi division, becoming the first ozeki from the country in the process.

Here we look at his meteoric rise in exclusive pictures, from his out-of-rank maezumo debut to his memorable title-clinching victory.

Never shying away from declaring his dream, Aonishiki is seeking to join Onosato and Hoshoryu at the exalted rank of yokozuna, the ancient sport's grand champion.

While Bulgarian Kotooshu, Estonian Baruto and Georgian Tochinoshin all previously fell short of reaching the top of the rankings, expectations are high for Aonishiki to become the first European yokozuna and the youngster has time on his side.
