Sept. 1

Japan marks the centenary of the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake, which devastated the capital Tokyo and surrounding areas, leaving an estimated 105,000 people dead or missing. Around 90 percent of the deaths were caused by fires. (Kyodo)
